hat Los Fresnos can win handedly with its backup quarterback leading the charge is a testament to their depth, their youth, and much more.
Javier Cruz, a junior starting tight end, accounted for three touchdowns Friday night — all in the opening half — to fuel the Falcons’ 56-0 win over Porter at Leo Aguilar Stadium.
Cruz started in place of the star quarterback Jonmichael Rosales, who was out sick, and made an immediate impression. He threw two touchdown passes during the opening half and also scored on a 40-yard scamper as Los Fresnos (7-2, 6-1 District 32-5A) won for the seventh time in eight games.
“We’ve been working for this game all week and just wanted to improve our skills, and I thought we did that as a unit today,” Cruz said. “My O-line, they blocked out hell of a game. They blocked their butts off for me, and I appreciate that.”
Cruz found Brandon Colon and Jonathan Crawford for scoring passes of 23 and 16 yards, respectively. He completed 4 of 6 attempts for 57 yards (all by halftime), while also tallying 112 rushing yards on 10 carries, including a ground score on the game’s opening drive.
“He did a good job for us. We’re very exciting about his future,” Falcons coach Clint Finley said. “I’m happy with the way he was able to execute and run our offense.”
The Los Fresnos defense also pulled through, particularly in the opening half.
Porter earned three first downs on its opening drive before quarterback Joel Garza threw the first of three interceptions. After the pick, though, the Cowboys failed to convert another first down until late in the fourth quarter.
By halftime, the Falcons held a 35-0 lead and continued piling on the points.
Omar Puente led the rushing attack, scoring three touchdowns and posting 106 yards and 12 carries. Akeem Simien also scored twice on interception returns (20, 34 yards) from Garza, who connected on his first three throwing attempts and went empty the rest of the way in nine attempts. He finished with 22 passing yards.
The shutout marked the third time in district this season that the Cowboys (0-9, 0-7) have been unable to score.
Without six starters, Porter struggled to stop big plays or create them. Garza netted 10 rushing yards after nine carries and Oscar Rodriguez matched that amount in seven tries.
The Cowboys attempted only two passes in the second half, both incomplete (including one interception). They’ll close out the season next week against winless Pace.
“Just trying to put some people in there to play some positions they haven’t played before,” Cowboys coach Hector Garcia said. “When you play out of position, it gets you.”
Finley said he was hoping Rosales “will be healthy and ready next week” when Los Fresnos closes out district at Harlingen South (7-2, 6-1).
