LOS FRESNOS - Coming off their first loss of the season, the Los Fresnos Falcons bounced back into the win column in a big way with a 44-3 District 32-5A victory on homecoming over the Lopez Lobos on Friday at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.
It was a bit of a sluggish start for the Falcons (4-1, 1-1 District 32-5A), who punted on three of their first four possesions. But they then scored every time they touched the ball before halftime to build a 30-3 advantage by intermission.
"This feels great," said Los Fresnos' Freddy Becerra, who alternated with fellow junior Jonmichael Rosales at quarterback. "We wanted to get back on track, get going again and get back to what we were doing at the beginning of the season. We want to finish perfect in district from here on out.
"We responded (after trailing 3-0)," he added. "We had to come out and do what we do best, which is run the ball. We just had to keep doing it. We had to play as a team and not separately. This helps us a whole lot going into our next game (against San Benito)."
Falcons running back Chris Galarza highlighted the victory by rushing for 141 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just eight carries.
After spotting Lopez a 3-0 lead on Noe Longoria's 25-yard field goal with 9:25 showing in the second quarter, the Falcons erupted as Galarza got things started on a 40-yard scoring run at the 9:04 mark of the period. A safety with 6:27 to go before the half made it 9-3 for Los Fresnos when a fumble on a fourth-down punt bounced back into the end zone and was downed by Lopez, giving the Falcons two points.
Galarza, who had 133 yards rushing by halftime, upped the lead to 16-3 with 4:53 showing in the second quarter on a 51-yard scoring scamper. It became 23-3 with 1:14 left in the half when Eduardo Ramirez, Galarza's backfield mate, darted 20 yards to the end zone.
At that point, the scoring before intermission wasn't even over yet in the Falcons' 30-point, second-quarter outburst. With 5.7 seconds remaining in the half, Los Fresnos' Manny Saldana recovered a Lopez fumble in the end zone for another Falcons TD, giving the home team a 30-3 edge.
Completing the scoring for the Falcons, Rosales scrambled 21 yards on a keeper for a score at the 8:38 mark of the third quarter and Akeem Simien returned a punt 84 yards for a TD with 10:58 left in the fourth period.
Miguel Cruz kicked the extra point after every Los Fresnos TD.
It was a nice rebound for the Falcons after last week's 21-14 conference loss at defending 32-5A champion Weslaco High. The Lobos (1-4, 0-2), coming off last week's 34-0 district setback against Pace, could not slow down Los Fresnos' potent ground game, which amassed 224 yards on the night. The Falcons passed for 92 yards.
The fact that the game turned into a mismatch was not too much of a surprise since Los Fresnos entered the contest ranked first in district offensively averaging 395.3 yards per game while Lopez came in ranked last in 32-5A in defense, allowing 417.3 yards per outing.
Still, the Lobos had some solid moments and were led offensively by running backs Manuel Banda and Alonso Carrizales, who gained 54 and 37 yards rushing, respectively.
The next 32-5A action for Los Fresnos will be Oct. 7 at San Benito, while Lopez next will play host to Weslaco High at Sams Memorial Stadium the same night.
