Enjoy!
LOS FRESNOS — This is all-too-familiar territory for the Los Fresnos Falcons.
It's district time. They're 3-0. They're ranked. They're feeling good.
Behind two big runs from Freddy Becerra and some second-half adjustments, the Falcons downed the McAllen Rowe Warriors 35-27 on Friday at Leo Aguilar Stadium in their home opener.
Clinging to a 21-19 lead early in the fourth, Becerra raced 47 yards to the house on the first play of the Falcons' drive to extend their lead to two possessions.
Then after a Rowe punt and a 15-yard penalty on Los Fresnos, Becerra found the house again, this time from 90 yards out. And again, it came on the first play of a drive.
Two big plays, one big swing, and with that, Los Fresnos had a 35-19 lead.
“I saw daylight, I was gone,†Becerra said. “That's what I was hoping for.â€
The Falcons were down 13-7 to start the second half, but quickly went ahead on a 44-yard pass from Anthony Schmucker to Christian Lozoya. Eduardo Ramirez followed that with a 67-yard touchdown run, which put Los Fresnos up 21-13. At that point, Falcons coach Clint Finley finally saw the same team that showed up for the first two games of the season.
“Feeling pretty good,†Finley said. “We made some good adjustments (in the second half).â€
Rowe, though, hung in the game. After Ramirez scored, the Warriors answered on an 18-yard pass from Javi Obregon to Tonny Bimpong.
But after both sides punted, the game became the Becerra show. That obviously wasn''t what the Warriors wanted.
“The early one (Becerra's first touchdown run) got them a little bit of momentum,†Rowe coach Paul Reyes said. “We were still in it, but it didn't help.â€
Los Fresnos, though, gladly took them.
“We just came back down and broke a tackle,†Finley said. “He was gone.â€
Becerra was one of three Falcons to rush for more than 75 yards, with Ramirez and Schmucker being the others. Chris Galarza, who came into the game as the district's leading rusher, carried the ball just eight times for 44 yards.
As Rowe (1-2) found out, the Falcons have other options.
“That's right, we got a couple of other guys who can do this as well,†Finley said.
The Warriors made the game interesting late in the fourth when, after Obregon left the game due to an injury, wideout Robert Valencia hit backup quarterback Justin Owens for an 11-yard touchdown on a trick play. After the two-point conversion, it was a one-score game.
Los Fresnos wasted roughly three minutes off the clock after that, which gave Owens and the Warriors a little over two minutes to tie the game.
Four plays later, Falcons linebacker Nick Cruz stepped in front of Owens' pass for the game-icing interception. With that, the celebration was on for the Falcons faithful.
“I'm very happy with the way we're competing,†Finley said. “(Great) effort, that's all you can ask from them.â€
Despite the loss, Reyes liked what he saw.
“I liked the intensity our kids brought,†he said. “Our kids stepped it up and we played well.â€
Rowe got on the board first on a 27-yard field goal from Juan Gomez.
Los Fresnos came right back with a 7-yard run from Ramirez that capped off a 12-play, 72-yard drive. But Rowe quickly answered, getting its first-half touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Obregon to Valencia. Gomez also added a 23-yard kick in the second quarter.
Obregon, who is expected back for the Warriors' next game, finished 25-37 for 285 yards. Valencia caught nine passes for 81 yards while Bimpong hauled in 10 passes for 109 yards.
The Falcons were unsurprisingly led by Becerra, who rushed 10 times for 162 yards. Ramirez had 102 yards on 18 carries, while Schmucker had 80 yards on 10 carries.
Now, for Los Fresnos, it can finally start talking about its showdown in two weeks at No. 3 Weslaco High in the District 32-5A opener. Both teams are 3-0, and really, the hype will write itself.
“It's going to be big,†Finley said. “It's Weslaco. It's Los Fresnos. That's all that needs to be said.â€
First, the Falcons will have their open week. Rowe will also have a bye, then take on Sharyland in its District 30-5A opener.
