Trevor Vittatoe and Jeff Moturi provided most of the offensive fireworks as the Blue team topped the Orange, 13-5, in UTEP's annual spring game on Saturday afternoon in the Sun Bowl.
Vittatoe completed 22 of 35 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns -- both to Moturi, who finished with seven catches for 100 yards. Moturi reeled in scoring passes of 8 and 30 yards as the Blue built a 13-0 lead at the intermission before surviving a scoreless second half.
UTEP quarterbacks Vittatoe, Tim Curry, Corey Trisby and Kyle Wright combined to complete 37-of-68 passes for 537 yards. Only 190 of the 537 passing yards, however, came in the second half when the defense dominated.
The Miner defense also did a good job of containing the run, limiting the offense to 96 yards on 44 carries (2.2 avg.).
"I thought the defense played really well," UTEP coach Mike Price said. "I'm really pleased with the progress we've made on defense. We got after the quarterback today, and moved the offensive line around a bit.
[Jeremy] Springer and [Roddray] Walker looked good, and I'm especially excited with them since both made position changes."
Springer was one of three Miner defenders with a team-leading seven tackles, and Walker was one of five with six stops. One of the highlights for the UTEP defense was Chris Moore tackling running back Vernon Frazier in the end zone for a safety in the third quarter.
Redshirt freshman Drew Thomas had the lone interception of the day for the Miner stop troops, picking off a pass from Wright.
The Miners will start fall drills on Aug. 6, with Socorro (N.M.) camp slated for Aug. 8-16.
"It was good to play a lot of young guys out there [on Saturday]," Price said. "I told the guys afterwards that this is just a start for us, and now it will be up to them to put the work in over the summer."
