UTEP head football coach Mike Price was in Los Fresnos, Texas, earlier this week, recruiting local quarterback Jeremy Springer, said a source who preferred to remain anonymous.
Price was spotted at a Los Fresnos basketball game, watching Springer play. Los Fresnos is about 10 miles north of Brownsville in South Texas.
Last year, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Springer completed 202 of 366 passes for 3,489 yards, a whopping 42 touchdowns and 8 interceptions for the District 32-5A Falcons. He averaged 268.4 yards a game.
But that's not all.
Springer also ran 123 times for 632 yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged 5.14 yards a carry and 48.6 yards a game rushing.
He helped his team to quite a year, as Los Fresnos lost to the Texas 5A state runnerup in the playoffs.
The Falcons beat Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo, 45-38, in the bidistrict round of the 5A Division 1 playoff bracket; and La Joya, 55-28, in the second round before losing to Austin Westlake, 45-19, in the third round.
Impressive, considering Westlake, a traditional state power, advanced to the state championship game.
When asked about Springer Wednesday, Price said, "We are recruiting that young man."
Springer reportedly attended Price's UTEP camp over the summer and stood out, along with San Jacinto, Calif., quarterback Chasen Stangel, who withdrew his commitment to UTEP in favor of Arizona State.
The source said Springer strongly is considering the Miners.
Tom Lemming, a recruiting expert for CSTV, said Springer is money in the bank for the Miners.
"Just the experience of working with Price, who I think is one of the best coaches in the country, and (Springer's) production in high school, I think he'll be a big star," Lemming said. "It comes down to production at the high-school level and whether you fit into a system. That means a lot more than throwing the ball 90 yards."
If so, Springer would join an interesting quarterback competition that will follow the departure of Jordan Palmer.
There is no shortage of candidates to succeed Palmer: senior Lorne Sam, sophomores Kyle Wright, Brandis Dew, and James Thomas II, and redshirt freshman Trevor Vittatoe.
Nabbing Springer would be a boost for a UTEP program that saw its recruiting season explode over the summer before cooling off during the past two weeks.
